St. Augustine’s Messenger was a magazine published monthly by the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) from December 1923 to June 1956 . The SVD, a Roman Catholic order focusing on missionary work since 1875, expanded its American missionary efforts to the South beginning in 1905. St. Augustine’s Messenger was an outgrowth of the opening of St. Augustine’s Mission House at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi in September 1923. St. Augustine’s Mission House was the first seminary open to Black men in the United States. Over its more than 30-year run, St. Augustine’s Messenger disseminated seminary news; solicited financial support for the seminary and SVD Black missions; promoted the SVD and Black religious vocations and ran news and general interest articles by SVD priests and lay contributors. This publication changed titles and publication schedules several times from its inception in 1916 to its continued publication today. These changes are as follows: The Colored Messenger (Mar. 1916 – 1918), published quarterly. Annual Messenger: Negro Missions, SVD (1918-1919), published annually. St . Augustine’s Messenger (Dec. 1923 – Jun. 1956), published monthly. St . Augustine’s Catholic Messenger (Sept. 1956 – Nov. 1961), published monthly. Divine Word Messenger (Dec. 1961 – Summer 1982), published monthly and later quarterly. In a Word (Dec. 1982 – present), published monthly. Inaword.com
