Bazar has just completed its first volume. It is the aim of the Conductors to make this paper the handsomest, best, and cheapest family journal in the world. Neither money, labor, nor pains are spared to secure this result, and to give to the home circle every week sixteen pages of the most useful and interesting reading that can be obtained. A glance at the accompanying Index will show that during the last year scarcely a single topic of domestic interest has been neglected. The newest Fashions have been furnished simultaneously with their appearance in Paris, and several hundred Patterns have been given, embracing every article of the wardrobe, and worth in themselves many times the cost of the paper. These Fashions and Patterns have been illustrated by thousands of the most beautiful Woodcuts ever published.in this country; while the Stories, Poems, and other articles have also been profusely illustrated. plates have also been given from time to time. Magnificent Colored Fashion- The care of children, house- hold and servants, the nursing of the sick, the preparation of food, hygiene— and, in short, the innumerable arts which fall directly within the province of women—have received their due share of attention. Considerable space has also been devoted to Fancy-work in its different branches, and to the manu- facture of the various tasteful devices which beautify a home and add to the comfort of its inmates. Apart from these purely domestic topics, the Conductors have ‘sought to make Harper’s Bazar a first-class literary journal, readable alike to young and old, and in which every member of the household would find something specially adapted to his or her intellectual needs. The charming social essays, “ Manners upon the Road,” by one of the most accomplished writers The The Stories and Poems have been furnished. by the best contributors to our other period- of the times, are destined to a high and permanent place in literature.
leading articles are full of shrewd suggestion and wise counsel. | icals, and are of a high order of merit. Each Number has contained an installment of a valuable serial: during the past year “Cord and Creese,” by Prof. James De MILLE, and “ Zhe Household Angel,” by Fitz Hucu Lup.ow, Esq., both novels of absorbing interest, have been published entire, together with a large part of “ Zhe Sacristan’s Household,” by the author of “ Mabel’s Progress,” and “Bound to Fohn Company.” The numerous satirical articles on the follies and fashions of the day have also attracted attention. The foreign correspondence has also embraced a wide range of subjects; and the numerous sketches, scientific, biographical, and miscellaneous, have comprised a | great variety of topics interesting to the home circle. The Bazar being neither a political nor a sectarian journal, all vexed questions in politics and religion have been excluded, and nothing has been admitted to its columns but what
was likely to be productive of harmony at the fireside.
