Show Business Illustrated v01n02 [1961-09-19] {BONES}
Show Business Illustrated v01n02 [1961-09-19]. Show Business Illustrated was one of Hugh Hefner's rare failures. Hoping to parlay his Playboy magazine success into mainstream media, Show Business Illustrated was a high class, glossy magazine that Hefner spared no expense in publishing. Publishing initiated with the premiere issue on September 5, 1961 (Volume 1, No. 1). Although it was well conceived, Show Business Illustrated lasted for just a mere 12 issues. It was sold for $250,000 and was absorbed by Show magazine, owned by the eccentric A&P heir Huntington Hartford. Featured in this second issue: "A Kook Named Carol" (on Carol Burnett); "The Pukey" by Nigel Dennis (a satirical short story about a creature called the pukey which does little except vomit - but everyone must have one because, well . . . everyone else has one. The illustration accompanying the story makes it clear that the pukey is a metaphor for a TV set!); ); a "Sneak Preview" of the movie version of the musical "West Side Story"; "TV's Bearded Profit" (on Mitch Miller and his corny "Sing Along With Mitch" TV show); "The Kings Depart" by Joe Hyams (a tribute to Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and Gary Cooper); "Year Of The Chimpanzee" (a preview of the 1961 Fall TV season); the second installment of the serialization of the novel Little Me , by Patrick Dennis, a parody "confessional" autobiography of the fictional actress" Belle Poitrine " (French for "Pretty Bosom").
