English Holders of American Securities Selling Freely—Great Interest Mani- fested in the Presidents’ Meeting— Clearing-House Certificates. New YORK, Jan. 7.—The market, all things considered, was stronger this morning than many anticipated. The action of Congress in taking up the question of silver legislation was unexpected, and frightened off many in- tending purchasers, while it increased the rates of English stock that have during the jast three days been such a feature of the market. There is no question that anything that looks like free coinage is very unpopular on Wall street, and that when such @ measure jsunder discussion, with any chance of suc- cess, ts influence is distinctly in favcr of the _ ENGLAND SELLING. : English investors are easily frightened by the thought of free silver, and being of the opinion that even the possibility of the pas- sage of a free coinage act will depress prices, foreign owners of American securities who pad intended to hold out for better figures, and were not compelled to dispose of them, sent selling orders by telegraph. That this was not done for the purpose of raising money 1s proved by the fact that the selling orders are generally accompanied by instruc- tion to buy at lower prices. As a conse- eyence more stock from abroad was for sale to-day than had been counted upon. The prospect of silver legislation in the imme- future has had little effect in putting a «ontothe bull talk that is curreut on the “reet, Some were inclined to believe that ene revival in prices would be postponed, but nearly all were of the opinion that a re- vival is inevitable, and that English stocks sold now willeventually be repurchased at higher figures. THE PRESIDENTS’ MEETING. The coming railroad meeting is considered more important, at least for the present, than anything that Congress is ket to do. A majority of the officials who are to attend have already arrived, and while all are reticent the belief is that a strong effort will be made to come to anagreement that will put a stop mot only to eutting. A frightful accident occurred in the West End this morning. While a number of work- men were engaged in excavating.a public sewer in the alley between Olive street and Washington avenue. Boyle and Newstead avenues, about 11:30 o’clock they struck a bed of gravel at the depth of about twenty-five feet and one side of the embank- ment fell inon them. Three men, Patrick Moran of No. 3435 Manchester road, Edward Prangie of No. #60 Manchester road and Patrick Ryan of No. 3942 Lucky street, were buried under about six feet of dirt. Their fellow workmen were fully half an hour extricating them from their awful position, and three of them were very dangerously and probably fatally hurt. Allare believed to have been injured internally. The men were removed to the Mullanphy Hospital, near Grand and St. Louis avenues. 4 A telphone message from the Mullanphy Hospital late this afternoon stated that none of the men were fatally injured. It was not thought from the hurried examination made that any of them were internally injured. All have now regained consciousness. A GENUINE REDUCTION SALE. Cut Glass, Sevres, Lamps, Royal Wor- cester, Doulton and Onyx Wares. The people who have visited the great re- duction sale now being carried on by the Mermod & Jaccard Jewelry Co., corner Broadway and Locust, are surprised and de- lighted with the extraordinary reductions that they see marked upon each article in plain figures. Though the sale has just begun, the volume of the business is something astonishing, and if you would avail yourself of it you should go quickly, because while all the lovely goods of this great house are choice, yet still by going quickly a more satisfactory selection can be made, as thé variety is greater. The Men Employed at Their Mine in Casey- ville Quit Work and Refuse to Allow Others to Take Their Places-—The Min- ers’ Demand. The Consumers Coal Co. of this city, who operate the Ruby mings at Caseyville, Illl., and the O’Fallon mines at O’Fal- jon, MIll., are having tgpuble' with their miners at the former place. It appears that the men have been receiving 42 cents a box for mining coal and on Dec. last they were notified that on Jan. 1 they would be reduced to 3 cents a box. The men refused to accept the reduction and the company has been en- deavoring to fillthe place with other men. Notices have been sent out by..the old miners, stating that they are now on ae “strike and requesting other men to remain away from the mines and not accept employment there. The men also state in these notices the re- duction that has been made in their pay and claim that the Ruby mines are the only ones in which the wages of miners have been cut down. SAYS.THEY HAVE BEEN DISCHARGED. Acall was made at the office of the com- pany in this city and Mr. Morrison, when ' asked about the trouble remarked: ‘*There is no strike going on at the mines, as the men who are out have all been discharged. We notified them on Dec. 15 that on the ist of the present month their pay would be reduced from 42 cents a box to 35 cents a box, or prac- tically from 2% cents a bushelto 2. cents a bushel. Our own weights of the coal and those of the railroad company show that our boxes average but seventeen bushels and thirteen pounds each. At 35 cents a box the men, therefore, receive a trifle over 2 cents per bushel for mining the coal. They ey take the coal from the walls of the mine and place it in a box and there are laborersto haul ft out of the mine and doall the other work. It is true that noother mine has reduced its men, but that is because we were paying more than any other mine. None of them give their men over 2 cents per bushel for mining coal and we could not afford to pay halfa cent a bushel more than othercompanies. For- merly our men received only # cents a box and they went on a strike and then they were ; offered either %35 cents a box or 2 cents} r bushel as they should elect. ey. took the % cents a box, and if that did not pay them as well as 2 cents a bushel they would certainly not have chosen it. Since last October they have been paid 42 cents a box, which is almost the rate of2% cents per bushel. When we paid them 2 cents a bushel other nes paid only 1% and 1% cents. Our men may claim our boxes hold more than they do, but the fact that they selected 35 cents a box in reference to 2 cents a bushel 1s the best evi- ence that my claim as to weights is correct. We pay our mentwice a month, and nearly all other companies pay ~~, month. Last Saturday we ad box up all their loose coal and remove their m the mine, and then we d them offin fulland discharged them. e adver- tised for mento take their placeand have some thirty-four men up there now and about - Clair County that we desire protection for our men and -morrow sagem | he will be on the ground. Mr. Adolphus Busch has been considerably annoyed of late by repeated questioning in regard ‘to the purchase of the House of the Good Shepherd site on Pine and Seventeeth to Eighteenth street, a deal in which it is said he made several hundred thousand dollars and that there was no phil- anthropy whatever in his pitt of thirteen acres inthe southern part of the city tothe ropert The story as circulated fiferr that Mr. Busch had some inside knowledge of the location of the new Union Depot and knowing the Sisters of the Good Shepherd to be compen for room at Seventeenth and Pine streets, gave them a tract of thirteen acres inithe southern past ofthe city where land is cheap, and re- leved themofthe present — py pay: ing $175,000 forthe entire block whic 8 bounded by Pine, Chestnut, Seventeenth and Eighteenth streets. The ground, as soon as the bill for the new Union Depot is passed, will be worth not less than $500,000 it is said. Asthe generosity and whole-souled philan- thropy of the — of brewers is well known, it was not generally believed that Mr. Busch would enter into any scheme of this kind ,and his statements regarding it, together with his denial of the story, are ry amy When the tale was retold to him this morn- ing by a Post-Dispatcn reporter, Mr. Busch was not in the least ruffied. ‘‘It puts mein an awkward position,’’ he said, ‘‘but lassure you there is nothing in it. [am more proud than everthat I aided the sisters now, an their coming rosperity. When I learned the sisters were mn want and after seeing how the poor women labored and almost starved them.- selves to keep 500 women and girls alive and free from contact with the world, I was moved. No one extended ahand to help th#m however, and I decided to make them a present. I gave them that roperty of mine in fee simple to have for all ime, and I determined to see them comforta- bly fixed upon it. We, I mean the sisters and a lew others besides myself, decided to build, a House of Good Shepherd for $400,000, andl romised to loan them $100,000 cash, without terest, on their old place. The negotiations are now almost complete, and I wili soon tve them the money. In the meantime only $40 000 has been raised by the sisters for the people have been siow. to the Sisters hem the cashin sums as would hold the property and if I ever sold it they should receive whatever it brou in excess of the sum I bought it for. 11 "hes sell outright. Aluminum is a wonderfull metal. More is being learned aboutit every day. It is only a short time since.a student in Ober- lin (O.) College worked out a scheme for ex- tracting the metal from clay. He went to Pittsburg, set up a little shopand borrowed electric power for some days. He extracted the metal right thefe and a reduction com- pany was formed,’ They are selling the metal at$i per pound and are making it for 10c per pound. The price will be reduced when the demand increases enough to attract other manufacturers into the busi- ness. A company in Chicago will be a strong competitor. We know what we shail be able todo. The model will probably be exhibited in Chicago soon. Some gentlemen from a scientific society there called on me the last time Iwas in vac ge and asked for permission totry the model in a large room. We will have a meeting of stockholders ina few days and I shall then lay the matter before them. If they consent the model will be shown.
