LOOKED LIKE LEON . The Animal Which William F. Pohiman Bought at a Fancy Figure. Horse men are discussing with great glee the funny way in which William F. Pohlman, the livery man at No. 2058 Baston avenue, got taken in in a recent horse deal. For some months past Mr. Pohl- man has been casting a covetous eye upon the sorrel trotter, Leon D., which bas been wintering in Zach Mulhall's stable at East St. Louis. Leon D. is a very fast one, having, it is claimed, made a mile last fall at a private trial in 2:20, ever since which achievement, Mr. Pohlman's am- bition to own him, if he could be got cheap, has been practically insatiable. Several overtures were made to Mr. Mulball, who, however, did not care to Sell. and with each re the trotter for half an hour feasted his eyes upon yay et form of the speedy aaimai as it stood in Mulhali's stable. While be was gazing at it Mr. Mulhail came along and him with the remark: Still my sorrel horse,eh? Well, it will to him. Quick as a flash Mr. over the money, the horse har- wanting to bu take just Pohiman closed the rand in a few minutes he. nessed to one of Mulhall’s drive him On took aturn along the Lucas Place was not a littie to find to get anything iike a fast clip out of the animal, a fact, however, whieh he attributed to natural causes. Since he bad the horse in his stables on Easton avenue a number of well-known horsemen ated him upon his ac- piness —— full strange ending came a large number of gen'lemen . Criticm judgment upon the ani- mal. and, though one or two iil-natured skeptics were overheard to express doubts about the identity of the borse, the verdict of the majority was so favorable that the adverse critics were soom forgotten. About 3 p. m. the animal was being examined by ick Roper, Bon Ua rues and Mr. lements of Famous, who had just that all persons who expressed doubt as to the horse's being the ORIGINAL AND ONLY LEON . were not judges of horse flesh, when Billy aes, who 9 that trotter frequentiy, join the party. He was 4 tee to as an expert with the question, Do you Know that horse? “Know that horse! said Billy, well, I should think I do. That's Leon D. tor a thousand.” “No, it aint Leon D.. for a thousand to five hundred,” quietly remarked a gent eman who had just entered and who proved to be Mr. Templeton. Bily wanted to e the bet right up, but Mr. Templeton advised him to g0 aly SF at any rate to feel the animals legs ore he put up his $500. Bally stooped and made a long and vareful exami- nation of tne horse's legs, aud when he got through he looked around the gathering with a puzzled ex- pression, and said, It don't go; that ain't Leon D. any more than lam.” It was then remarked that Leon D. was 16 hands high, while the horse under inspection was only 15,2, and gradually other points of dissimilarity. were discovered which showed conclusively that Mr. Ponlman had become the victim of a misunderstanding. The fun of the thing is that Mr. Pohlman, when he secured the auimal from Mulhall, purchased simply what the latter described as his “sorrel horse, so that be has no legal grounds upon which to have the sale set aside. It is aiso but justice to state that the nag he has is not sucha bad one after ali, being of the kind that any dy can drive with safety and worth certainly some- where between $50 and $60. The Defense Moves the Dismissal of the Charge Against Fish. New Tonk, March 24.—The trial of ex-President James D. Fish of the Marine Bank, was continued to-day. The prosecution closed yesterday, and the defense opened this morning and moved for the dismissal of the charges against Fish on the ground that no offense had been proved. In the o pinion of counsel it would not be necessary to put a single witness upon the stand, in defense of the acis of his client. The defendent was not guilty of any of the counts in the indictments. What the president of a bank may do within the scope of his administration may be mal-administration, but did not come under the limitations of the statute. There must be willful misappropriation of the funds of the institution to make action criminal. “MARRY ME ORI DIE! A Lever Commits Suicide Because He Could Not Marry on Sunday. Wanmorox, March 22.—Mr, Bayard. said last Friday that he had not sent any message around to his subordinates in the State Department, saying that ne intended to make no changes. Hoe sad that he bad had no time as yet to go into a single one of the rooms under him and that he could not say in advance what he was going to do. He was against turning out any of the good clerks, but wherever improvements could be made in the service by changes he intended to make them, I asked him how he liked his new place in the Cabinet. He shrugged his shoulders as he said “I can't say that I like it as well as the Senate. Perhaps I am too old to change my babits of life easily... Then he added, “But I see much bere to interest me—much that is of great importance. I want to-do my part towards keeping this country out of weak positions and free from silly and entangling alliances with other governments.” Further along in the conver- sation I asked him about the project which is now being agitated again of having a peace conference in this city et the representatives of all the nations on this continent. This subject be did not think worth discubsing, but tossed it aside with a charac- teristic gesture of contempt. It is very certain that the State Department will not imitate any of the features of the foreign policy when it was under the charge of Mr. Blaine. 2 ; I hear from Mr. Bayard's friends that he is very much pleased with the State Department. He hopes to make it one of the model departments of the Government. The two who bas never attended to his duties. ® was ap- pointed from lowa some years ago. Hs name was O'Connor. Dr. Wharton, who succeeds him, is a gentleman of high character and social standing. He has a much wider reputation than men generaliy have who consent to take subordin- ate department places. John Hay, who was in the department before him. had a very wide diplomatic erience. had Frederick Seward, who was ore him. The advantage of diplomatic know edge and the ability to speak the French are v le to an assistant secretary simply asa means Of making himself more agreeable to the diplomatic callers. There are plenty of people in the State Department, however, who speak French. The most prominent of the diplomatic people speak Eng ish. r. Porter will have no difficulty io trans- acung the business of the office. The importance of the place has been unduly exaggerated. There is very little to do in the State Department. If the Secretary of 8 is a clear-headed man of business, like Mr. Bavard, and we have no entangling foreign relations. the matters to be considered are pribe:pally tiiose of a common place and routine character. Civil- ity, patience and a littie common sense are all that are required to get op with the trifli incidents of the daily business. 2 * Agentleman who is very familiar with the State Department said the other day to me, Lou seem to share the neral outside prejudice against Mr. Brown, the chief clerk of the Now, in order to show that you really ve nothing . | sonal in it, 1 wish you would give the other side.’ bo bere itis.
