OLYMPIC THKATER, — John McCullough's opening night of hie en- gagement wus an omen of the success which will greet bis dramatic seasen in St. Louis. The theater was packet from dome to pit, and standing room even was ata premium. For the initial performance Dr. Bird's tragedy ot »The Gladiator’’ was selected. Spurtacas isa character in which Mr. MeCuliough ts pre- eminent. Physical'y he isthe embodiment of the bold und daring Thracitai who for two years deded the best armics ot Rome. As a representative of Rowe's dreaded enemy in the fearfal servile wur, McCullough has no equal on the stage. It is a personation in which his natural qualities vided by his fine dr«matic ability’ foree him to the very front rank. His rendering of the shepherd of Threce, from his capture by the Romans, his training in the gladiaterial arena, in the luxurious Capua, his vietorious rising with his brother giadiaters against his haugh- ty masters, his final defeat and tragic Aeath, is forcible and powerful in the extreme. ‘lhe pathetic and po-tical Scenes Lecween bis wife and brother, which the author has interwoven withthe hi-+torieal acceunt, lend a highly dramatic interest to the ’ M: »~ McCullough is probably the valy ac- tor onthe st use Whe cun Go justice te the part.
