‘BARRY FRANKLIN, Vice President. success in Credit Pian? SLL Tr Hl i= HONOR PATRON AT jp ART HILL MEETING} Champ Clark and Gov. Hadley Freely Applauded by Large Crowd. CHORAL MUSIC A FEATURE} —| ™ Kreismann and Congress- man Graham of Illinois on the Program. Speeches by Gov. Hadley and Speak- er Champ Clark and singing by the Knights of Columbus Choral Club were featurere of a big outdoor celebration of Columbus day at Forest Park yester- day afternoon. Several thousand per sons stood on the sloping sides of Art Hill and joined in the chorus of ther Star Spangled Banner and America, The celebration was planned by the Knights of Columbus and was most suc- cessfully carried out. Above the spescer’s stand at the foot of the hill waved American tiags and the platform was drapeu in blue, white and yellow, the K. of C. colors. Be- tween the speeches a band played pa- triotic airs. All heads were bowed while the Rev. Father Cesar Spigardi pronounced an impressive invocation. Then all joined in singing America. Mayor Compliments Organization. Mayor Kreismann made a brief speech in which he complimented the Knights of Columbus as an organization which is working to uplift humanity. Chairman James EH. King introduced Cnamp Clark. In marked contrast to the other frock-coated, silk-hatted orators of the day, Clark wore a busi- nes’ suit, a brown overcoat and a broad-brimmed brown Fedora bat. He Was greeted by prolonged cheering. After paying a serious tribute to Co- lumbus as the discoverer of a new world, he aroused laughter by a littie joke at his own expense. “Once,” he said, “T had an invitation to dine at the White House. For the same day and hour-1 had an engage- ment in Ohio by keeping which I gould have made $150, but I canceled ft and responded to the dinner invitation. That was ene time I got to the White House, anyway. \I conaidered the White House invitation a command just as ! considered this invitation to speak. here today. I was away out in Central Kan- sas, but I obeyed your cOmmand and here I am.”’ Indorses Discovery of America. Toward the end of his speech Clark again evoked laughter when he said: ‘Tam not ready to indorse every prop- osition that comes along, but I want to say right here that I give my un- qualified indorsement to the discovery of America and I don’t know anybody I would rather see discover it than my old friend, Christopher Columbus.” There are 26 republics now flourishing in the world, Clark said, and all of them found their inspiration inthe great American Republic, which was made possible by Columbus and his band o? intrepid followers. Gov. Hadley also was warmly greeted when he arose to speak. He said that ii wag a proud day in his life when i 1909 he signed the bil) making Colum- bus day a State holiday. Some ob- jected, they said, there were already enough holidays. “But my idea,” said the Governor, “was that we shouldn’t give all our time to making money and that there couldn't be too many patriot- ic holidays to honor men who are really deserving of honor.” Congressnan James M. Graham of Springfield, Ill., closed the speech-mak- ing with an eloquent tribute to Colum: bus. Members of the Knights of Columbus. in automobiles, escorted the speakers from the Jefferson Hotel to ° Forest Park.

He: Is ‘Worth Several Millions of ‘Dollars and Started With a Shoe String.
Another impetus to the growth and progress of St. Louis wiven yesterday when B. H. Kroger of Cincinnati, O., signed a check for $1%,-. (00 ae the purchase price of a plot of ground: ‘and a plant at Tiffany and Vis- ta avenues, Rutger street and the Frisco tracks, which will be the distributing point and new canning factory for his ® or m grocery, meat, bakery and vegetable stores in this city. The $125,- 000 paid for the property is a very small part of the millions of dollars that Mr. Kroger? has at his command—about the size of a dollar and a quarter to the ordinary man, and less than that, in faet, to what he himself had 29 years ago, when he laid the foundation of his fortune with a paltry $310. Is Quick of Action. But he is a man of nimble brain, keen perception, and rapid-fire action. That was oéver better illustrated than the dash he showed in closing the big plant deal. His agents had been looking for a distributing center.for several days. Mr. Kroger came to town, and went to the Jefferson. He looked over his busi- ness interests—the 30 Maurer-Remley stores that he had recently purchased, wave advice where it was needed, and then went out with his men to look cver prospective sites for a warehouse, hakery, canning factory and distribut- ing center. While riding by the Frisco tracks. he saw a place for sale, jumped out of his auto, looked it over, called upithe agent, and like the typical American that he is, closed the deal in a Yew hours. Nothing could be more characteristic of the man. The plot purchased is 650x2%. Ajs -a0n as the deal was closed Mr. Kroger vave orders for the installation of a battery of modern bread: and cake vit with up-to-date machinery by which he hopes to make. the; plant the : clepnest and brightest in the United 3 States.
The warehouse. and canning plant are to be built as rapidly as possible. The new plant will give the Kroger Co. facilities for handling 30 cars. In the meantime Mr. Kroger is going to 2d@ more stores to the 30 he already hag in St: Louis. He operates now 175 retail grocery, meat and vegetable stores in Cineinnati, Dayton, Columbus and §$t. Louis, doing a business of $10,000,000 a year—and all this with a sis as » a fad hard. I was greatly troubled with dandruff and falling hair. I tried many adver- tised hair preparations and various pre- scriptions, but they all signally failed; many of them made my hair greasy, so it was impossible to comb it or do it up} properly. I think that many of the things I tried were positively injurious. and from my own experience, I cannot too strongly caution you against using preparations containing wood alcohol and other poisonous substances. Services in Richmond Heights. At the Richmond Heights Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Stephen Kaylor de Kins will preach at 11 a. m. today on “Meeting Belshazzer at the Banquet in the Royal Palace in Babylon.”’ ee ee Ever See Anything That the Wuerpel point of view is un- usual most people feel immediately Like ZEMO for Pimples? They seem to retire into them- selves; and withhold their charm from the idle stare of the passerby. In this peculiar quality there lurks an aesthetic and decorative value that undoubtedly belongs to Wuerpel’s painting and that wins the appreciation of his admirers. Instead of demanding the spotlight, as so many pictures seem to do, they sink back and wait until their note of har- mony attracts a sympathetic eye. Fur those who are in accord with the poetic leaning that guides Wuerpel’s brush, there is keen chatm in his “panels’‘ and “arrangements” and interpretations of nature's spirit. In the neighboring “annual exhibition of selected American paintings’ most of the pictures seem to have been con- ceived from a different view point. Many of théin exhibit striking contrasts of color an@ bold mass of line and compo- sition. A few show a sympathy in spirit with Wuerpel’s point of view. Among the latter may be named No. 77, “‘Color Harmony,” by F. Luis Mora, N. A.; No. ‘ . = : Soa. 43, “Night in Maine,” by Ben Foster, OS sree . 1p, eae | | Sa ARN Metts Pete eh seth. **s rf ** _
