sade ) theirs the hospitality praised to the skies. Why? Because they have a 15-acre lake, stretching out \ before their front door. This is not saying this young couple do not at other times possess accomplishments eagerly sought in society. Their country place of 60 ucres in St. Louis County, out in the direction of Creve Coeur, with its golf links, archery court, fishing, canoeing and landscape, has alway8S been a sort of Eden where formal folk were wont to forget the tension of the town. Deep in the midst of hills and trees and shrub- beries but only a few steps from the street car or automobile, it is as secluded as it is accessible. So it is that everybody in society and everybody who knows somebody who knows the Laughlins pulls every string for an invitation to “Lochlin.” The Laughlins seldom have an opportunity to send out jnvitations. And so0.completely has the water superseded other forms of amusement this season that guests invited to dinner arrive in bathing suits (donning them at the boat houses on the way) and sit in wet bathing suits and Puddles of water while they dine, and dine heart- ily, too, let me add. And, as I was about to say a while ago, some scciety maids become classic nymphs and sirens at the water’s edge, and some of the society men become Apollo Belvidefes, but there are quite a few satyrs and fauns and Bacchuses and some S0ddesses who are not exactly Venuses, who are winning all the honors when . comes to the actual plunge into the cold green twilight of the swishy, swirling deep. Sad it is, but true, that quite a num- bér of ballroom belles and beauties have felt the pangs of the wall flower, left high ana dry, like 89 many turtles on a log—only turtles don’t blis- ter their necks in the sun. charming Some Beauties Seem to Draw Mosquitoes Only. SHOULDN'T like to mention the names of certain ladies who are such radiant attrac- tions by electric light in winter, but who =SSse ‘nes sis YZ | Ppp itit: ny t NC QUi ges ge ce oo *. oy J > ~~ atm. 2 . ** . 4 4 reece ‘ _** 22 rr ee ee AES) “ee ‘3 , oe

seem to be attracting only mosquitoes at the wa- ter’s edge. And the men who are such shining lights in their profession, who dazzle only by means of their bald heads and spectacles when they get out iss the enlightening glare of the open. Indeed, there are any number of sophisticated debutantes and charmers experienced at social maneuvering, who have had to yield the center of attraction to mere fledglings and upstarts in the social game. The scene of. social functions has been shifted to the water. “Rob” Winter, who will be known as Miss Mar- raret Winter when she comes out; Miss Theodosia Rarnett and Misses Gladys Wendover, Mary Nor- vell, Mary Lambert, Marian Thacher, Mary Mor- ton and Nancy Bakewell, stil! to be’heard from in the social world, will be well prepared for so- cial conquest if they can make swimming parties fashionable as coming-out parties, Miss Emilie Cabanne, coming of a family whose prowess in athletics is’ not the least of its identi- fications with St. Louis history, just couldn't help swimming if she wanted to. She tis only a school girl, but her feats among the fishes are the de- spair of the women and the envy even of the men. Others whose style and: grace: and popularity in society do not fail them atthe water’s edge— nor in the middle of the lake—are Misses Miriam and Anna Benoist, Lucy Norvell, Ann Drew, Kathleen Terrill, Jeanette Fuqua, Laura Perry and Marie Bolkman. And swme matrons famed for aquatic stunts are dirs, Laughlin, Mrs. Ford Thompson, Mrs. Champe Carter Conner, Mrs. Saunders Norvell, Mrs. Percy Werner and many rio, others. It is pleasant to record that Mrs. Norvell, who may have difficulty in keeping up with’ her Veiled Prophet queen daughter and her handsome husband in the. globe-trotting expeditions, ‘out- distances them all in swimming competition. Both Mrs. Norvell and her sister, Mrs. Werner, were taught by their father, Mr. Leonard Matthews, to swim in infancy. For endurance in the water, Mrs. Norvell is always a wonder, as long as she is permitted to ore 323i; 2 rewere sc, +t o.seuscesind 3:32 Wetare eee 32 thts4 stg
