Man Has Nine Children While His New Wife Is Mother of Two. BALTIMORE, Md., June 6.—While the body of her fourth husband, John L. E. Rancke of Towson, was awaiting burial, license was taken out for the marriage of his.widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Rancke, and George F. Reter. Mrs. Rancke’s
Neighbors ‘chained ths alae Chad the His marriage would take place immediately after the funeral, and that the same minister would perform both ceremonies. The widow corrected this impression by announcement that the nuptials would be deferre@} until next Sunday. She talked freely, saying that. Reter, who is the father of nine children, while she has two, had been a friend of her late husband, and had offered to pro- vide for her should anything happen to
the latter. The dead Rancke was a veteran of the Elisha Peal and Frederick Maisel. The woman’s maiden name was » eurcamnton Barmer.

Seventh and Ladies’ Department Washington Prof. R. A. Haight, superintendent of GAMES TWO EVENINGS
the Alton public schools, where the question as to whether the blacks shall be admitted to the white public schools or not is raging, takes the stand that the mandamus writ recently awarded by the State Supreme Court referred only to the two children of Scott Bibb and not to any others. “Tf the Scott Bibb children, Minnie and Ambrose Bibb, apply for admittance into the public schools next fall we shall have to admit them,” said Prof. Haight. “The person refusing to admit them would get into serious trouble, I fear. That will mean admittance into the Washington School, originally in- tended for white children, but the Su- preme Court will have to be obeyed. “However, if they should apply at the present time within a few days of the close of the school term, they would be told the same thing that we tell white children, that it would do them no good to enter school so near the _ close of the school term, and to wait for the beginning of the next. “Two or three colored parents have applied for the admittance of their chil- dren to white schools within the past ‘week or so. “We told them to apply again next term. As yet there is no necessity for taking the order of the Supreme Court into consideration, for we did not dis- criminate in telling the colored chil- dren the same as we did the white when refusing them at the close of the term. “But, as I understand ‘{t, the order of the Supreme Court means no other children but the children of Scott Bibb, and should any others apply next fall I dén’t see as there would be any need of admitting them. Of course, that means they wouldn’t be admitted.” » Cialim It Wag Test Case. The adherents of the other view state that the Bibb casé was a test.case and therefore all colored children can be ad- mitted to white schools. Attorney Brenholt, who, for 12 years, carried the case through the courts; when it was five times remanded and reversed by the Supreme Court, and succeeded in getting the writ of man- damus awarded against the Mayor and members of the City Council of 12 years ago, compelling them to permit the children of Scott Bibb to enter the Washington School or any other con- venient school, takes the stand that the Supreme Court’s decision is merely the pugtiag Sp Moree Ofee-genera@l law that no discrimination agathst negro children shall be madé and that they shall attend any public school.

Two Thousand. Tables and 10,000 Lead Pencils for . Visitors. NEW YORK, June 6.—On the long- est day of the year there will assem- ble in New York city the greatest meeting of card players that the world has never seen. From all parts of the United States they will pour into the metropolis of America, at least 5000 of them, to take part in the eleventh an- nual congress of the North American Skat League, which is to be held in the Grand Central palace, June 21, 22 and 23. The magnet that draws all these Players together from all parts of the union is a tournament, lasting two days, that will decide who is the champion skat player of the world, and incidentally the winner of the first prize $1000 in gold, presented by the New York Staat’s Zeitung, the great German newspaper. The coveted title and its reward goes to the man that can win the most games on his own declaratiens. The second prize, fér the player that can win the greatest number of points on his own plays, apart from the points won from others by defeating them, wili be $500 in gold, presented by the league. Then comes a third prize of $300 for the player who can win a solo with the smallest number of trumps. After that come ether prizes for the second best scores, beginning at $250, and going down gradually to $100, $50, $25, and so on, the lowest be- ing $10 each,, but so distributed that get a prize of some kind. Entertainments Galore. In addition to the tournament, which will take place at 7 o’cloak on the even- ings of June 21 and 22, there will be an endless round of amusements for the players, and their wives and families. One morning there will be breakfasts at sat of. the: big. breweries, another norning there will be excursions to various points of interest, one being to Coney Island, where Fred Thompson, himself an enthusiastic skat player, has thrown open the gates of Luna Park to the visitors. On the evening of June 23, there wili be a grand enter- tainment or ‘‘Kommers,” after which the prizes will be distributed to the winners. At first it was supposed that gbout 2000 players would attend, and the Lieder- kranz and Arion clubs kindly placed their houses at the disposal of the Executive Committee. But, as the en- tries for the tournament came pouring in, it soon became evident that the num- ber of players would be nearer 5000, which was far beyond the capacity of any two clubs in the city. For a time the management was at its wits’ end to know what to do with the enormous number of players; but it finally succeeded in getting the Grasd Central Palace, which is, next to Madi- son Square Garden, the largest building every eighth player at the congress will 2d Floor 00 More Finest Spring Suits |
