AINE 1451 MILES LONC te - Purchase Would Giye Harriman Chicago-Galveston Di- rect Connection. THREATEN S TEXAS ROADS
Line frem St. Louis Has Lit- tle Rock and Memphis Branches.
Special to the Post-Dispate i. MEMPHIS, Tenn., Feb. 18.—Semi-of- fivial announcement was made_ here to- day by an Official of the Cotton Beit (St. Louis Southwestern) Railway, the general offices of which are in St. Louis, that the.Cotton Belt into. the control of E. road has ; H. Harriman. The Cotton Belt line extends from St. Louis and Cairo to Shreveport, La., and Sherman, Fort Worth, Hillsboro, Gates- Ville and onterey, Tex., with branch lines to Little Rock and total of 1951.6 miles. | iy Comme ct ns with the J'linois Cen- ‘trai at Cairo, the Houston, East & West Texas at Shreveport, and the Southern passed Pacific at Houston, all of which are controlled by him, Mr. Harriman, through the purchase of the Cotton Belt would obtain direct connection be- iween Chicago and Galveston. Moreover, such a purchase would menace the Texas & Pacific, owned by the Gould interests, as in thé Cotton Belt he would obtain the road Which has been used as the outlet for the Texas & Pacilic at Fort Worth. Belief is given to the announcement of Harriman’s purchase of the Cotton Belt by the fact that George Gould has heretofore held the controlling interest in the Cotton Belt only through the in- fluence exerted over proxies, him a nominal control of the stock. of 92 per tee ee eases come arene .
