Kelly, prominent in Catholic church affairs and also in the contracting and pbuilding industry of St. Louis, and wnder ordinary circumstances one of the most jovial, good-natured and easy-going fellows in the world, is a Kittle disconcert- ed over the pwhblicity of the news from Belleville that on last Tuesday a marriage license was issued in that Illimois haven of true love to one Thomas J. Kelly and Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald, both of 8t. Louis. “I have not been married to Mrs. Fitz- gcrald or to any one else,’’ said Mr. Kelly, with much emphasis of the indignant sort Saturday morning. ‘‘Am I the only Thomas J. Kelly in St. Louis? Are there n0 others?” ‘ Further questioning revealed, however, that Mr. Kelly’s displeasure over the ru- mor was much like that of Henmry Clay's chent, who objected to @ report that he had once been in jail—not because the ru- ‘Mor was groundiess, or was based upon mistaken identity, but because it was true, every word of it. The Thomas J. Kelly, who secured the marriage license in Belleville, and the Thomas J. Kelly, contractor, in the Oriel building, president of St. John’s Council, No. 2, enights of Father Mathew, and president of St. Alphonsus’ Branch Catholic Knights of America, are oné and the same person. However, it is absoiutely trve that there has been no marriage. ‘he license wus never used. Portions of it, in llttle squares | ut the size of stage snowflakes, are in | r. Mr. 60n_ he and the widow decided to slip over to Bellevilla and be married without dis- ncaa the neighborhood at home with a more formal wedding ceremony. They went to Belleville in the stcrm Tues- day and had a mighty uncomfortable time in the j ge:ting there. It was,5 o’eloek afternoon when thev reached the office of the marriage license clerk. That official had put up the sbutters and closed shop for the day, but the thoravehgcoing Mr. Kelly made him open it again and issue the required document. ank you, genilemen,”’ said Mr. Kelly. folding up the paper and placing it in his inside pocket. ‘“Good day to you all.” it are you not going to get married here,” said a man coming forward from the little crowd in the clerk's office. ‘‘f am a justice of the peace and I can -marry you as fast and as well as anybody on this side of the river.” “Not much, my good sir,”’ returned Mr. Kelly. “We are going to be mirried by the priest. But cheer up. Here's $1. Go have a drink on Thomas Kelly, Esq. And rmit to congratulate you, sir, on losing @ mighty fine job.” It ‘will be seen from these words that Mr. Kelly is something of a joker. He could mot resist having a bit of fun with the disappointed justice. But the justice didn’t see the joke that per, He pocketed the ¥il.
