St. Kitts has not yet made up its list of dead, but 200 thhouses in the town itself were demolished. St. Thomas escaped, being protected by mountains. The land wires being all down, no word can be secured from the eastern coast towns in Porto Rico. Arrovo, to the east- ward of Porio Rico and Guayana, are re-| ported to have suffered even more in pro-| portion than Ponce, Porto Rico. Salinas and San isabel have to be added to the list of wrecked towns. In the cattie country the storm inflicted terrific damage and wnole herds of beef cattle were de- stroyed. | ‘he cyclone struck San Domingo with less | fury, but at Porto Plata the wharves were wrecked. many houses were thrown down and three barges and two large schooners were cast upon the beach. wal ATLANTA, Ga. ( Sar a SAN JUAN, Porto Rico, Aug. 12.— Reports here are that 500 bodies have already been recovered from the waters which submerged Ponce during the re- cent hurricane. The fatalities due to the storm will certainly be in the thousands instead of in the hundreds. Two rivers, the Portuguese and Canas, overflowed and caused the drowning in Ponce. The southern coast was swept clean as far as Yauco, 18 miles away. The towns of Tallaboa and Juana Diaz were destroyed. Only the large church edi- fices are left standing there. The storm of 1867 killed 6000 people, and it is feared that the number of deaths resulting from ‘Tuesday's hurricane greater. There is not a drop of water in Ponce to drink. The cisterns are full of salt water from the ocean and the stench arising from the dead bodies is dread- ful Widespread sickness is sure to follow. The commissary stores at Playa were destroyed.
