The Wolf-Men: A Tale Of Amazing Adventure In The Under-World - Frank Powell (Cassell, ca. 1911)
The Wolf-Men is an imaginative boys' lost race adventure novel about the discovery of an underground world under the North Pole, replete with prehistoric monsters and a hairy lycanthropic race. It was originally serialized in Cassell's The New Boys' World story paper in 1905. A sequel ("The Vengeance Of The Wolf-Men") was serialized in the same story paper in 1906 but has never appeared in book form. This is a scan of a later printing, circa 1911, of a rare book which was originally published by Cassell in 1906. Includes an ad in the back of the book for All About Airships by Ralph Simmonds (Cassell, 1911), which helps to approximate the publication date of this edition. From a contemporary review of the book (in The Publishers' Circular And Booksellers' Record , Christmas Number, 1906): ""A tale of amazing adventure in the Under -world, most excitingly told. A professor, James Mervyn, plans an expedition to the Pole in a submarine vessel which is to be properly equipped to drive beneath the great ice barrier and so reach the open sea beyond. The vessel is constructed by a clever engineer; and four men, Silas Haverly, [American] millionaire and explorer, Sir William Seymour, baronet, Garth Hilton, model boatmaker, and Tom Wilson, engineer man, . . . after numerous adventures, start off for the Pole [with Professor Mervyn] . We will leave the reader to find out for himself the result of the expedition, and will only add that the book is most exciting and truly worth reading…
