THS THYC LIBRANY * CRKERS Se ptembe r-October,1929 Voda 9 Nos -3 The September number was crowded out by the fall rush of work. Josephine Owen, the youthful custodian of th j ; t g a 1¢ Darwin Branch, twice ina de the sixty-mile trip to the central office, and ath tae mother's help, personally selected the book: for the branch. The Board of Supervigors on October 7 accepted the bid - ington Rana Business Service to install Bitragi Savers sie furniture in the Lone Fine Branch. Independence will also get a magazine rack and children's tables and chairs, by exchange. Library Bureau furniture is a beautiful oak of the most sturdy construction and of excellent style. The librarign's charging desk is small, put arranged for the greatest convenience and neatness in use. Above the shelves of one section of the book-cases are bulletin boérds, which will enable the librarian to display pictures end posters for the children's department. Mrs. Best is miking splendid use of the course in children's literature that she took the past summer ct Riverside under iiss Wil- helmina Harper. We consider her the consultant és to children's books and reading for tle teachers and parents of the north end of the county, and have bought a number of tie books so re comme nded. If any of you spell Rinehart "Rhinehart" again, we'll report. that we find no such author mentioned. The Library has hed some interesting gifts lately. The last shipment from Leath Valley Brenchi contcined ten new popular books; Lone Fine contributed twenty, and Bishop twelve. Others have been received from time to time. We ere enclosing with this © booklist of some of the good books to be had from the library. This is one week that libraries observe. We have clwaeys made a point of trying to interest the children in better reading at thet time, ana to have sugge stions for fethers and mothers who wish to buy books for the child's own library. But not only children need to be reminaédof the value in good books: the older boys and girle, yes, and the men and women, allow the extremely temporary radio and newspaper, or the cheap magazine, to crowd out the more permanent type of reading. "For books are more then books, they are the life, The very heart and core of ages past, The recson why men lived and worked and died, The essence anc quintessence of their lives." -~ smuy Lowell.
