THE INYO LIBRARY WORKERS ~ Wol. 2 July 1929 ~ No.1 ° The Librcry is resuming its monthly letter to the library work- ers in the county, Send us news of yourselves and your branch to include next month, Wheat are you doing that is inte resting? What delightful books have you just now? Independenee has been enjoying "Kristin Lavransdatter", the Nobel prize novel by Sigrid Undset, "I was simply fascinated by it", said one reader. "You know it's very long, but I couldn't let it alone; I'd stir the pot with one hand and hold the book in the other. I read it morning noon, and night", “Black April", "Scarlet Sister Mary", and "Queen Cleopatra" are also passing briskly from hand to hand, Mrs. Sessie T. Best, custodian of the Bishop Branch, will com- plete the summer course of the Riverside Library School August 16, She is working very hard cnd enjoying it greatly. We expect her to come back full of new enthusiam for her work, und of new idees for us all. Mrs V.V. Davis, custodian ct Tecopa, says her neighbors are working at night and in the cool of the day, and resting during the. heated hours, and they are needing more books than usual. She is passing a lonely summer while her husband is in the hospital, Office work has been largely concerned with the annual report this month. Yt shows 2 net total of books, 23,814, of which 1429 were added this year. School essentials comprise nearly half of these, and children's books over one-third of the remaining, The adults were left 468 volumes, well divided between fiction and non- fiction. Biography, literature and education were the classes best represented, Books lent for home recding numbered 49,672, a gain of nearly 3000 over last year, Circulation by branches is given be Low; 1927-28 1928-29 Aberdeen 178 391 Big Fine 9508 10560 Bishop 16553 17374 Cartago 420 410 Darwin 323 863 Death Valley 1137 681 Ha iwe e 97 268 Inde pendence 8030 9028 Lone Fine 740% 8515 Manzanar 1566 82 (Lapsed) Olancha 152 118 Owenyo 568 428 Power Plant 98 170 Sho shone 262 215 Te copa 655 569 Not all branches were were visited this year, but the needs of checking and exchange of books, of settling the Lone Pine Branch into its new building, and of attending to other matters in con- nection with the lerger branches end schools, necessitated 57 visits by the librarian and her assistant, We hope that we shall see you all next year. One of the most delightful phases of libriry work is the help one is able to give. Here at Independence we are now he lping (not ourselves, but through our books) to plan parties and vacations, to build and furnish new homes; showing the way to better jobs, or to an advance in those they now have; to enjoy more fully a trip to Europe; to improve their mental ana physical heelth- even to train the pup or the baby'. Yet nearly all the books we lend are not for such practical purposes, but rather for enjoyment, or in the case of serious reading, for general broadening ana growth of the mind, What are your experiences in these lines?
