Pluck And Luck #139 [1901-01-30]. "Jack Wright And His Deep Sea Monitor; Or Searching For A Ton Of Gold" by "Noname" (Luis Senarens). Originally published in "The Boys' Star Library #272 [1892-08-27]. From E. F. Bleiler's Science-Fiction: The Early Years : "Jack Wright and His Deep Sea Monitor (The Boys' Star Library 272, 27 August 1892) is concerned with a treasure hunt. A Carib manuscript, written in hieroglyphics, describes the temple of a very rich native cult. Included in its furniture is a huge solid gold idol with diamond eyes. Unfortunately, the temple is under water, for the island sank a couple of generations ago. But Jack wins out, even though he is opposed in his quest for the idol by a vicious Carib cult leader and Black Beard the pirate. (It is not clear from the text whether this is Teach, the historic Black Beard.). Jack gets the idol, which he and his comrades melt up and bank, but Jack keeps the diamond eyes as souvenirs."
