När operation Barbarossa inleds 22 juni 1941 bryter tyska styrkor igenom den glesa och bristfälliga sovjetiska försvarslinjen. Första dagen förstörs 738 sovjetiska flygplan, varav 528 förlorades på marken. Redan på kvällen den 22 juni begår general Kopts, chefen för de sovjetiska flygstyrkorna på västfronten, självmord.
