Le 15 juin 1963 ouvre le premier hypermarché à Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, dans l'Essonne, au sud de Paris. Un magasin gigantesque pour l'époque : 2 500 m2. C'est 10 à 20 fois plus grand que les magasins d'alors. Et surtout, il y avait de tout : tous les produits alimentaires ET des produits non-alimentaires, y compris du textile, du bricolage, des petits articles de décoration...
