Episode Malta 1666: The Knight Who Tried to Enslave His Own City
In 1666, Malta was rocked by the trial of Fra' Giovanni Battista Gattinara, a Knight of the Order of St. John accused of plotting to sell Valletta's Christian children into Barbary slavery. This episode dives into the audacious conspiracy, the role of the Inquisition and the Grand Master Nicolò Cotoner, and the tense politics between the Order's secular ambitions and its religious vows. We explore how the case exposed the hypocrisy of a corsair state that called itself a defender of Christendom, the brutal justice meted out, and the legacy of a scandal that forced the Order to tighten its legal grip on the island. Featuring the Sacre Infermeria, the Castellania, and the shadowy underworld of the corso economy.
