The Great Siege of Malta: The Battle That Saved Christendom

13 Sep 2026 · 10 min · S5 E230

In June 1565, the Ottoman Empire launched its most ambitious naval invasion yet against the tiny island of Malta. Overseeing the defense was Grand Master Jean de Valette, a man whose iron will would define the siege’s outcome. This episode explores the tactical brilliance and brutal reality of the conflict that began with the bombardment of Fort St Elmo in May. We examine how the Knights Hospitaller, vastly outnumbered and outgunned, held the line against Mustafa Pasha’s forces for nearly three months. The narrative delves into the specific strategies employed by both sides, from the desperate defense of the coastal batteries to the critical arrival of the Sicilian relief force in September. Through detailed accounts of key moments—such as the night raids and the final assault on the main fortifications—we uncover why this battle became a turning point in Mediterranean history. Listeners will hear about the specific roles played by figures like Turgut Reis and Girolamo Kahler, and learn how the resilience of the Maltese population contributed to the eventual victory. This is not just a military recounting but a human story of survival, strategy, and the geopolitical shift that followed the lifting of the siege.
