Episode Malta's Great Siege: The Knights' Last Stand
In 1565, the Ottoman Empire launched a massive invasion of Malta with over forty thousand soldiers. For three months, the tiny garrison of the Knights Hospitaller, led by Grand Master Jean de Valette, held off overwhelming odds in what became known as the Great Siege. This episode explores the brutal siege of Fort St Elmo, the desperate defense of Valletta, and the eventual arrival of the Sicilian relief force that turned the tide. We examine the military strategies employed by both sides, the role of local Maltese civilians, and how this single conflict reshaped the balance of power in the Mediterranean. Through the eyes of survivors and commanders, we reconstruct the horror and heroism of those ninety days that saved Christendom from further Ottoman expansion westward.
