The Knights' Mapmakers: Charting Malta's Fortress Isle

27 Aug 2026 · 6:59 · S5 E213

In this episode of The Story of Malta, Lucas and Luna step away from the siege and the corso to explore a quieter but equally vital craft: cartography. Long before satellites, the Knights of St John commissioned detailed maps of the island to plan fortifications, manage resources, and project power. We follow the work of the Italian engineer and cartographer Giovanni Francesco Abela — no relation to the historian — whose 1647 map of Malta became the standard for over a century. We trace how the order's mapmakers adapted to the realities of a limestone island with few natural harbors, and how their surveys shaped the building of Valletta. We also uncover the surprising role of the map in diplomacy, as copies were sent to Rome and Madrid to argue for funding and recognition. Along the way, we meet the French military engineer Antoine de Ville, whose 1629 plans for fortifying the Grand Harbour were so detailed they influenced later architects. The episode explores a controversy: the mapmakers' deliberate distortion of distances to flatter the grand masters who paid them — a subtle form of courtly propaganda. By the end, we see how these parchment landscapes were not just tools but statements of sovereignty, etched in ink and ambition.
