Malta's Knights and the Politics of the Mediterranean

6 Sep 2026 · 9:04 · S5 E223

While previous episodes have explored the physical fortifications, medical practices, and naval raids of the Knights Hospitaller in Malta, this episode shifts focus to the complex political machinery that sustained their rule. We examine how the Order navigated the treacherous waters of European diplomacy, balancing loyalty to the Pope against the competing interests of Spain, France, and Venice. The narrative centers on Grand Master Jean de Valette’s delicate maneuvering during the aftermath of the Great Siege of 1565, highlighting the internal factionalism within the Langues of the Order. Lucas and Luna discuss the role of the Capitulum Generale, the assembly of knights that functioned as a parliament, and how these internal votes often carried more weight than military victories in shaping Malta’s future. The conversation also touches on the economic pressures of the Tributo del Falcone and the strategic use of marriage alliances by the noble knights to secure patronage back home. By understanding these political dynamics, listeners will see Malta not just as a fortress, but as a micro-state operating within the high-stakes game of sixteenth-century international relations.
