Truong Tan's Last Stand: Vietnam's Forgotten War with Siam

19 Sep 2026 · 10 min · S5 E239

Most histories of Vietnam focus on resistance against China, France, or the United States, but the Kingdom of Siam—modern-day Thailand—was also a formidable imperial power that repeatedly invaded the Vietnamese south. This episode explores the tragic and often overlooked conflicts between the Nguyen Lords and the Siamese Empire during the late eighteenth century. We follow the story of Truong Tan, a brilliant military commander who defended the frontier town of Prey Nokor (later Ho Chi Minh City) against overwhelming odds. Through his eyes, we examine how Vietnam’s southern expansion into the Mekong Delta brought it into direct collision with Ayutthaya’s ambitions. The narrative details the brutal sieges, the use of naval warfare in the Mekong waterways, and the eventual collapse of the Siamese hold on Cambodian territory. By uncovering the life of Truong Tan and the strategic shifts of the Nguyen Dynasty, we reveal a complex chapter of Southeast Asian history where three empires vied for dominance over trade routes and fertile lands. This is not just a war story, but an examination of identity, borderlands, and the resilience of a region caught between giants.
