The Nguyen Lords and the Mekong Delta Expansion

21 Oct 2026 · 7:41 · S6 E266

While earlier episodes have explored Vietnam’s legendary defenses against northern invaders like the Mongols and Ming Dynasty, this episode shifts focus southward to a different kind of conquest: the territorial expansion into the Mekong Delta. We trace the rise of the Nguyen Lords in the seventeenth century, who turned a fragile foothold at Phu Xuan into a maritime empire through diplomacy, mercenary warfare, and hydraulic engineering. Listen as we unpack the strategic marriage alliances with Cambodia, the recruitment of Japanese ronin, and the brutal yet effective expulsion of the Khmer forces from Prey Nokor. This is not just a story of war, but of land reclamation, rice cultivation, and the complex political maneuvering that reshaped Southeast Asia’s geography long before French colonialism arrived.
