Episode The Mijikenda Kaya Forts: Kenya's Ancient Stone Cities

0:00 8:07

Long before the British arrived or the Swahili coast flourished, nine distinct Bantu-speaking groups called the Mijikenda built fortified settlements known as Kayas along Kenya’s northern coastline. These stone-walled villages were not just defensive structures but sacred centers of governance, ancestor worship, and community life. In this episode, we explore how these ancient cities functioned as independent city-states for centuries, their complex social hierarchy managed by councils of elders called Ng’oma, and their deep spiritual connection to the forest spirits. We look at the architectural ingenuity of using coral rag and lime mortar without iron tools, the ritual significance of the mpango tree within each Kaya, and the tragic decline that followed colonial disruption and missionary pressure. By the mid-20th century, many Kayas were abandoned as people moved to coastal towns for economic opportunity, leaving behind ghost towns now recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This story reveals a sophisticated pre-colonial African urbanism that challenges simplistic narratives about indigenous settlement patterns in East Africa.
