The Kipsigis: Kenya's Silent Guardians of the Rift

14 Sep 2026 · 9:47 · S5 E236

While the Mau Mau and the Nandi Resistance dominate the narrative of Kenyan anti-colonial struggle, the Kipsigis people of the White Highlands remained largely under the radar of major historical texts for decades. This episode explores how the British colonial administration specifically targeted the Kipsigis not just as laborers, but as a model for settler agriculture, turning their fertile lands into the heart of the 'White Highlands.' We dive into the life of Leng'eno Ole Nangole, a respected elder who navigated the complex diplomacy of the 1920s and 30s, refusing both outright war and total submission. Through his eyes, we see the implementation of the Native Authorities system, which co-opted traditional leadership to enforce colonial laws, and the devastating impact of the 1935 Land Apportionment Act that legally stripped Kipsigis communities of their most productive grazing lands. Lucas and Luna discuss the quiet resistance of the Kipsigis women, who maintained cultural cohesion through secret gatherings, and how this era laid the groundwork for the political alliances that would eventually form Kenya's independent government.
