The Kakamega Forest: Kenya's Last Rainforest

11 Sep 2026 · 8:59 · S5 E233

While much of Kenya’s history is told through the lens of colonial railways, urban centers like Nairobi, or the guerrilla warfare of the Mau Mau in the Aberdares, there is another landscape that holds deep historical significance: the Kakamega Forest. As Kenya’s only true tropical rainforest, this Guineo-Congolian remnant has served as a refuge for indigenous communities like the Ogiek and Lurambi for centuries. In this episode, we explore how this dense, mist-shrouded ecosystem shaped local spiritual practices, resisted deforestation efforts during the colonial era, and became a site of tension between conservation mandates and human rights. We’ll look at the specific role of Chief Kiprono and the British Forestry Department in the mid-20th century, examining how the designation of forest reserves displaced pastoralists and altered land tenure systems. This story isn’t just about trees; it’s about the political ecology of East Africa, the resilience of the Mijikenda cultural traditions, and the ongoing struggle to balance environmental preservation with the rights of those who have called these forests home since before the arrival of the Imperial British East Africa Company.
