Episode The Igbo Republic of Nri and the Power of Peace
While much of West African history focuses on empires built by cavalry or conquest, the Nri Kingdom offers a radically different model of statecraft. Spanning roughly from the ninth to the twentieth century in present-day southeastern Nigeria, Nri was not an empire of territory but of influence, spreading through ritual purity, agricultural innovation, and the concept of iwa ezi, or good character. This episode explores how Nri maintained peace for centuries without standing armies, utilizing sacred oaths and the authority of its priests, the Eze Nri. We examine the kingdom’s role in regulating trade, resolving disputes across Igboland, and its eventual decline following contact with European missionaries and colonial forces. By looking at artifacts like the bronze heads found in Okpanam and oral traditions preserved by descendants, we uncover a society that prioritized spiritual integrity over military might, challenging conventional definitions of power in pre-colonial Africa.
