Episode The Oyo Cavalry and the Battle of Osogbo
In this episode, we explore the military might of the Oyo Empire, focusing on their unique reliance on cavalry in a region dominated by tsetse flies. We trace the lineage from Oranyan’s founding of the kingdom to the rise of the Kakanfo, the commander-in-chief who led the Ajagun horsemen across the savanna. The narrative centers on the pivotal Battle of Osogbo in 1860, where the forces of Ibadan clashed with the remnants of Oyo power. We examine how the introduction of firearms shifted the balance of power, leading to the civil war that fractured the empire and allowed emerging powers like Lagos to assert independence. Through the lives of figures like Shango and Alaafin Abiodun, we uncover how religious authority and martial prowess intertwined to rule West Africa for centuries.
