Episode The Battle of Oshogbo: Yoruba Civil War and the Rise of Ibadan
While previous episodes have explored the grand sweep of the Sokoto Jihad and the political structures of the Hausa states, this episode zooms in on the violent internal fracture of the Yoruba world. We examine the collapse of the Oyo Empire following the famous flight from Oyo-Ile and the subsequent power vacuum that allowed the warrior city of Ibadan to rise. The narrative centers on the pivotal Battle of Oshogbo in 1860, a clash not just between armies but between competing visions of order and legitimacy. Lucas and Luna discuss the roles of key figures like Kosoko, Layi, and the elusive Akitigbe, while unpacking the military innovations that defined the era. This is a story of cavalry tactics, the breakdown of traditional succession, and how local chieftaincies reshaped the map of West Africa through sustained conflict rather than imperial decree.
