Episode Alexios Komnenos and the First Crusade: Byzantium's Gamble
In 1095, Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos sent an urgent plea for mercenaries to the West. What he got was a wave of armed pilgrims that would reshape the Middle East. This episode explores the tense alliance between Byzantium and the Crusaders, from the siege of Nicaea to the conquest of Antioch. We meet Anna Komnena, the historian princess; Bohemond of Taranto, the wily Norman; and the fateful decisions that sowed centuries of distrust between East and West. A story of diplomacy, betrayal, and the struggle for Anatolia.
