Episode Socrates the Hoplite: The Warrior Behind the Philosopher
We often picture Socrates in the Athenian agora, questioning passersby. But before he was a philosopher, he was a hoplite—a heavy infantry soldier. This episode follows Socrates on campaign: at Potidaea in 432 BCE, where he saved Alcibiades' life; at Delium in 424 BCE, where his coolness under fire awed even his enemies; and at Amphipolis a few years later. We draw on Plato's Symposium and Laches, as well as Alcibiades' famous speech, to reconstruct the man behind the bust—a man of extraordinary physical courage and endurance. We also consider how his wartime experience shaped his philosophy of virtue and his famous claim at his trial that 'the unexamined life is not worth living.' Socrates the soldier, Socrates the citizen, Socrates the martyr—this is the full picture.
