Episode Timur's Lost General Khizr Khoja
In this episode of Fexingo History, we turn our attention to Khizr Khoja, the powerful emir and governor of Transoxiana who ruled in Tamerlane’s name while he was away on campaign. While earlier episodes have explored Timur’s military campaigns, architectural terror, and literary circles, few have examined the internal politics that kept his empire stable during his decades-long absences. We delve into the complex relationship between the conqueror and his most trusted lieutenant, exploring how Khizr managed the bureaucracy, collected taxes, and maintained order in Samarkand and Kesh. The narrative also covers the eventual betrayal at Herat, where Khizr attempted to usurp power from Timur’s grandson, Muhammad Sultan, leading to a tragic confrontation that altered the succession crisis. This story reveals the human cost of imperial ambition and the fragile loyalty that held the Timurid dynasty together.
