Episode Ottoman Grand Viziers: The Men Behind the Throne
In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the role of the grand vizier in the Ottoman Empire, focusing on the powerful men who served as the sultan's right hand. From the early days under Orhan Gazi to the era of Süleyman the Magnificent, they discuss how figures like Sokollu Mehmed Pasha and the Köprülü dynasty wielded immense influence, often outshining the sultans themselves. They examine the vizier's duties, the politics of the Divan-ı Hümayun, the dangers of the role, and the dramatic power struggles that shaped the empire's fate. Along the way, they touch on the famous 'Sultanate of Women' and the rise of the Köprülü reforms, offering a nuanced portrait of a role that was both powerful and perilous. The conversation is a lively and insightful look at the men who really ruled the empire, from the shadow of the throne to the center of power.
