The Ottoman Art of Calligraphy: Written Power at Topkapı

11 Aug 2026 · 6:52 · S4 E200

In episode 200, Lucas and Luna explore the intricate world of Ottoman calligraphy, the visual language of power and faith that adorned everything from imperial decrees to mosque domes. They trace its evolution from the early Islamic kufic to the elegant thuluth and naskh styles perfected by master calligraphers like Şeyh Hamdullah and Hâfız Osman. The conversation reveals how the Ottoman sultans — from Fatih Sultan Mehmed to Abdülhamid II — were not just patrons but practitioners of the 'divine art', taking lessons from the finest hattats and even devising their own scripts. Lucas explains the significance of the tuğra, the sultan's calligraphic signature that functioned as an official seal, and how the art became a path to spiritual and social status, with calligraphers enjoying prestige comparable to that of court poets. The episode also touches on the materials — the reed pens, soot-based ink, and polished paper — and the strict apprenticeship system of the meşk, where students copied their masters' models for years. By the nineteenth century, as the empire modernized, calligraphy faced new challenges from print and lithography, yet it endured as a sacred craft. Lucas and Luna reflect on how the art of the written word held an empire together, conveying both divine revelation and imperial authority across three continents.
