ハンガリーの人口構成はマジャル人が圧倒的多数を占めており、ヨーロッパのなかでも極めて均質な単一民族国家に近い特徴を持っています。国内にはわずかながらロマ人やドイツ人などの少数民族も暮らしていますが、その比率は非常に限られています。このような高い同質性が形成された最大の要因は、第一次世界大戦後に締結されたトリアノン条約による劇的な領土の縮小でした。この歴史的事件によって旧王国の領域と人口の大半が失われた結果、国内の非マジャル系住民が激減しました。同時に、この国境線の変更によって、現在でも周辺諸国には数百万人にのぼるハンガリー系住民が少数民族として暮らす状況が生まれています。
