0:00 30:49

Welcome to Voices of Mathematics, a podcast from the Mathematics Faculty at the University of Cambridge.

From number theory and geometry to cosmology and quantum physics, join us to explore topics across pure and applied mathematics, mathematical statistics and theoretical physics.

In this episode we talk to Dhruv Ranganathan, Professor of Algebraic Geometry in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics (DPMMS).

He has recently been awarded a prestigious 2026 Whitehead Prize by the London Mathematical Society. The prize celebrates his groundbreaking work as 'an extraordinary algebraic geometer with boundless energy and tireless dedication to the mathematical community'.

Algebraic geometry is about "the interaction between different parts of your brain, the one that likes solving equations and the one that thinks visually," says Dhruv. We sat down with him to get an insight into this vast and exciting area of modern mathematics.

This podcast is produced in collaboration with our Plus outreach platform (plus.maths.org), and hosted by Plus Editors Marianne Freiberger and Rachel Thomas.
