En 1980, Vicki Durian, de 26 años, y Nancy Santomero, de 19, atravesaron el país en autostop para asistir al Rainbow Gathering en Pocahontas County, Virginia Occidental. Sus cadáveres aparecieron a pocos kilómetros del festival. Años más tarde, un residente preocupado por el caso aportó información sobre los asesinatos, pero se convirtió en el principal sospechoso.
