赤道付近の言語は母音が多く、北に行くほど子音が増える。地図に色を塗ると本当にそう見えるのに、同じ「言語の家系」の中で調べると相関がきれいに消えてしまう。矛盾に見えるこの結果から、研究者たちは「気温の影響は数千年かけてゆっくり刻まれる」という美しい答えを導きました。科学の面白さは、仮説が当たった瞬間ではなく、当たらなかった場所にあると教えてくれる回です。
