The Nightclub Business, Fake Alcohol & 4AM Discipline - Malcolm "MJO" Okubo | Coffee Pump (E134)

25 Oct 2026 · 1 h 14 min · S1 E134 · Explicit

Konnichiwa Fam,

On this episode I sit down with Malcolm "MJO" Okubo. At 25 he co-owns some of Nairobi's biggest nightlife spots, works in fintech at Honeycoin, and runs the MJO Living on YouTube. Before any of that he was trading forex at 20, wrapping cars, importing routers through COVID and selling shawarma at a car wash. I enjoyed this one a lot. He is sharp, he is honest about the parts that did not work, and the discipline on this guy at his age is something else.

We talk about:

- Whether opening a nightclub in Nairobi is actually profitable

- Why so many clubs are dead within three or four months

- How location decides whether a club lives or dies

- Why that side of Westlands is coming back to life

- How brand activations and sponsors really work behind the scenes

- Why strong weekday sales are the real test of a business

- Theft in the nightlife industry and how managers handle it

- The fake alcohol scare and going branch to branch scanning every bottle

- Counterfeit everything: laptops, car parts, medicine, phone cases

- How to tell a bottle is fake (alcohol should never freeze)

- The 4am gym routine and 10,000 steps before 7am

- Where that discipline actually came from

- Getting bashed online over a watch, and going watch shopping with the guy instead

- Dubai, a 2,500 dirham tequila bottle and the level of money being spent there

- Forex, EM Capital at 20, car wrapping and the shawarma machine

- Joining Honeycoin and moving money across 29 African markets

- Why he started MJO Living and what he wants it to do for young Kenyans

- Politics, his food chain theory of life and the number that would make him content

Hope you enjoy the episode.

Best,
