Episode FROM DETROIT TO ATLANTA: THE MAN WHO DOCUMENTED HIP-HOP HISTORY || NUFACE || EPISODE 093
What happened to hip-hop? Has the culture changed for the better, or have we lost something that made it special in the first place?
Larry "Nuface" Compton, better known as Atlanta's unofficial Hip-Hop Historian, has spent more than 30 years documenting, collecting, and preserving the culture. From Detroit to Atlanta, he has witnessed the evolution of hip-hop firsthand, from its underground roots and the rise of OutKast and Goodie Mob to the emergence of Atlanta's trap music movement.
But his story goes beyond music. Nuface has built relationships throughout the industry, curated hip-hop exhibitions, collected thousands of rare artifacts, and developed a unique understanding of how culture, influence, and social currency create opportunities.
In this conversation, we get into some of the biggest questions surrounding hip-hop today: Has the culture declined? Why is physical music making a comeback? What separates Atlanta's hip-hop scene from the rest of the country? And how do you recognize the next generation of stars before the world knows their names?
We also explore how hip-hop saved his life, the importance of networking, how creators can monetize their social currency, and what it takes to turn a passion for culture into something meaningful.
