The US has been heavily involved in Oceania since the 2nd World War. Now that US bases in West Asia have been destroyed in the Iran war, is it finally time for the Pacific Pivot? With US munitions drained by yet another West Asia war and its Gulf bases battered, Washington's long-promised "Pivot to Asia" is back on the table. This week on Colonial Outcasts, the anti-imperialist podcast your hawkish uncle will hate, we head to Aotearoa/New Zealand with Dr. Nathan Rew of The University of Waikato, and Bianca Ranson of Kaiawhina Tamaki. New Zealand is a microcosm of how the US empire manages its rivals and its vassal states alike.
We cover:
🔻 The Pacific Pivot: how Obama's 2011 "Rebalance to Asia" became permanent US doctrine, and what it means for governance, daily life, and land sovereignty in New Zealand
🔻 Five Eyes: what the intelligence alliance is, how it expands US reach in the region, whether it provokes China, and what Kash Patel is after
🔻 The Pacific Islands Forum: can small island states shape the Indo-Pacific order, or are they being turned into pawns over climate finance, rare earth minerals, and maritime control? Is the Forum compromised, and why is Israel a partner?
🔻 China vs. the US: who is the real threat in great-power competition?
🔻 Resistance: the nuclear-free Pacific, Indigenous land rights, and the Māori protest movement
🔻 Election season: New Zealand's hard-right government and its problematic oppositionYou can Follow Bianca and org here:
