Episode She Quit Her Job to Build a School, Then Almost Ran Out of Money | The Story of Penelope Brooke
What if some of the skills Ghana needs most are the very ones young people are least interested in pursuing?
In this conversation, Penelope, founder of the African Center for Technical Training (ACTT), talks about the perception problem surrounding technical and vocational careers in Ghana.
Construction, agriculture, health, technology, and manufacturing have the potential to employ millions of young people. Yet many young people still gravitate toward careers they see as more “sexy”, while technical careers are often overlooked.
Penelope shares why changing that perception matters, what she discovered while visiting technical training institutions, and why training someone to become a skilled artisan involves far more than simply learning how to use tools.
She also opens up about her own journey, from struggling to find a job after university, to leaving her job with “no second plan,” using her savings to start ACT, struggling to survive before funding came through, and eventually building a team and institution around her vision.
This conversation is about skills, jobs, entrepreneurship, perception, and what it really takes to build solutions to Ghana’s problems.
Watch the full conversation and let us know: Are young people choosing careers based on what Ghana needs or what society considers successful?
