Episode #147 Kevin Sheedy - AFL Royalty
This week Brian and Harrison intro the show by covering all the major topics in their lives and within the AFL, including; Brian's weekend at the Telethon in Perth, Wayne Carey's podcast split with Sam Newman, the latest Australian Sport Hall of Fame inductees, AFL State of Origin & player hair testing, NBA kicks off, the White House Press Secretary, and plenty more.
Their guest this week is one of the biggest names in Australian football, Kevin Sheedy. The chat is packed full of footy history, unique characters and plenty of stories from an extraordinary career.
They look back on the Tigers’ golden era under Tommy Hafey, the characters around the club and what life was really like behind the scenes. Sheeds reflects on his own playing days, his competitive edge and some of the tricks and innovations that helped make him such a unique figure in the game.
The conversation then turns to his remarkable coaching career, 27 years at Essendon, 4x premierships and the challenge of knowing when it’s time to move on. Sheeds shares stories from the Bombers’ glory years, the decision to take on the challenge of building GWS from the ground up, and the players and premierships that meant the most to him.
There’s also the story behind the creation of the Anzac Day clash and Dreamtime at the ’G, his passion for Indigenous football pathways, and his thoughts on how the game has changed as it’s become more professional. Along the way, BT and Sheeds revisit some of football’s great characters, the lessons of leadership and whether there’s anything he would have done differently.
A brilliant trip through Australian football history with one of the game’s great innovators.
