When you’ve tried everything and have nothing left to give your dysregulated child, how do you find your way back to calm? Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, an expert in emotional dysregulation in children, shares practical strategies through her Regulation First Parenting™ approach.

When you have nothing left to give your dysregulated child, even the smallest meltdown can push you past your limit. You’ve tried everything, but your own nervous system is running on empty.

In this episode, learn how to break the reactivity cycle with simple resets, fewer demands, and regulation-first parenting—without expecting yourself to be perfectly calm.

Why Do I Feel So Depleted When Parenting a Dysregulated Child?

You can know every trigger, understand your child's needs, and have a toolbox full of coping strategies—and still reach a point where you have nothing left. Knowing what to do and having the capacity to do it are two different things.

When you're constantly anticipating meltdowns, managing sibling conflicts, communicating with teachers, and juggling everyday responsibilities, your own stress cup can run empty. You may become reactive, shut down, or feel guilty for not responding the way you wish you could.

This doesn't mean you're failing as a parent. It means your nervous system needs support, too.

• Recognize depletion: Running out of patience isn't the same as not knowing how to parent. • Notice your patterns: Walking on eggshells and constantly monitoring everyone's moods can drain your capacity. • Give yourself permission to be human: Even parents who understand regulation have hard moments.

Real-life example: You spend all day helping your child manage their emotions, only to lose your patience when another meltdown happens at bedtime. That moment doesn't erase all the work you've done.

How Can I Co-Regulate With My Child When I'm Dysregulated Too?

You don't have to be perfectly calm to help your child move toward regulation. Sometimes, the most helpful first step is recognizing that you're overwhelmed and creating a little space before responding.

Regulation isn't about staying calm every second. It's about building small moments of regulation that help you respond with greater intention instead of reacting automatically.

• Reduce your words. Try saying, "We're both having a hard time," or "I need a minute." • Reduce demands. Focus on immediate safety and decide what can wait. • Try one micro-reset. Take three breaths, step outside, use cold water, or pause for a few seconds before responding.

The CALMS Dysregulation Protocol offers parents a practical framework for understanding dysregulation and responding with greater intention. Explore more at drroseann.com/calms.

What Should I Do When My Child Has a Meltdown and I Have Nothing Left?

When both you and your child are overwhelmed, focus on creating space, not solving everything immediately. A lecture, correction, or conversation about consequences is unlikely to help when emotions are running high.

Imagine it's 9 p.m., your child refuses to go to bed, and you're exhausted. Instead of launching into another explanation, ask yourself what truly needs to happen right now.

Keep everyone safe, lower the demands, and save the lesson for a better time.

• Prioritize safety first. Address immediate risks before anything else. • Delay non-urgent conversations. Homework disputes, lectures, and consequences can often wait until everyone has more capacity. • Use a simple phrase. "We can talk about this in a minute" can help you pause without abandoning the issue.

Regulation-first parenting isn't permissive parenting. It's about doing things in the right order so your child has a better chance of learning and responding.
