1517 年，鄂圖曼土耳其征服埃及後，採取了極其鬆散的統治模式。1805 年，穆罕默德·阿里迫使土耳其蘇丹任命他為埃及總督。他的目標非常明確：擺脫土耳其控制，建立一個由他家族世襲的獨立現代帝國。 穆罕默德·阿里於 1849 年過世。他的繼任者們（頭銜改為「赫迪夫」，即副王）大舉向歐洲銀行借高利貸，興建鐵路、電報網絡，並在 1869 年完成了人類工程史上的奇蹟——蘇伊士運河。1876 年，埃及政府宣告財政破產。為了抵債，埃及政府被迫將蘇伊士運河的股份賤賣給英國。西元 1882 年，英國以「保護僑民與運河安全」為由，出兵轟炸亞歷山大港，並直接派軍進駐開羅，埃及正式步入了長達數十年的英國實質殖民統治時期。1952 年 7 月 23 日清晨，由納瑟與納吉布核心領導的秘密組織「自由軍官」，發動了一場迅速且幾乎未流血的軍事政變。
