法蘭西第三共和國成立於 1870 年 9 月 4 日，在普法戰爭中拿破崙三世戰敗被俘之後，持續了近 70 年，直到 1940 年在第二次世界大戰中被納粹德國擊敗。共和國成立經歷幾次重大危機： 巴黎公社， 布朗熱危機， 巴拿馬醜聞和 德雷弗斯事件。 為了恢復法國國際聲望和重拾民心，積極殖民地擴張，第三共和國時期是法國殖民地達到頂峰的時期。二次大戰中，法國戰線全面崩潰，1940年6月22日，法國在貢比涅森林，（此處正是1918年德國投降之地）與德國簽訂停戰協議。 貝當元帥解散國會，自任「法蘭西國國家元首」，法蘭西第三共和國正式宣告終結，取而代之的是威權主義的維希法國。
