黎巴嫩的發展脈絡從古代的航海貿易，演變到現代因「教派權力分立」而陷入的政治僵局。古代腓尼基人並不以武力征服土地，而是以貿易征服人心。1920 年 9 月 1 日： 法國將軍古羅在貝魯特正式宣布成立「大黎巴嫩州」。1943 年的《國家公約》是黎巴嫩現代史上最重要、卻也最具爭議的「君子協定」。它雖然成功讓黎巴嫩擺脫法國殖民、走向獨立，但也將「教派配額」深深地烙印在國家的骨架中。1975 年 4 月的一場巴士槍擊案引發了全面內戰，黎巴嫩隨即陷入長達 15 年的混亂。15 年間導致約 15 萬人死亡（佔當時人口 5%），數十萬人流亡海外（形成強大的黎巴嫩海外僑民社群），國家基礎設施徹底摧毀。
