公元330年，君士坦丁大帝在古希臘城市拜占庭上建立了「新羅馬」（後稱君士坦丁堡）今土耳其伊斯坦堡），並將帝國的政治經濟中心遷至此地。羅馬帝國在395年分裂為東西兩部分，而東羅馬帝國一直自視為羅馬帝國的繼承者。在西羅馬帝國於476年滅亡後，繼續存在了將近一千年，直到1453年被鄂圖曼土耳其帝國攻陷為止。拜占庭帝國是一個歷經千年、文化燦爛的帝國，它不僅是羅馬文明的守護者，也是東西方文明交流的橋樑，對歐洲乃至世界的歷史進程都產生了不可磨滅的影響。
